Three Forks Trail / Waterfall

Carpool Time: 7:30 AM at Intown Community Church
Hike Distance: 8 miles
Difficulty: D3-D4
Cost: $20 per person
Hike Leader: Peter de Lastic

Three Forks is the confluence of Holcomb Creek, Overflow Creek and Big Creek to form the West Fork of the Chattooga River. The three creeks and the West Fork are part of the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River, the only area in Georgia with this designation. The trail to Three Forks is through dense forests and although it is steep the last half mile of three-plus miles on an old logging road, it is well used and easy to walk. The area is remote, beautiful, very impressive and well worth the trip.

The trail first will take us to the 15 foot rugged Overflow Falls, with a huge swimming pool beneath. We will enjoy the beauty for a short while, then we will bushwhack our way on old overgrown, forest service roads toward the Big Creek and the ‘Three Forks’ intersection. Here we will have lunch & swim for about 30 minutes.. From here we will cross Overflow Creek to visit another nice waterfall and swimming hole on Holcomb Creek, some 20′ high. We will stay ,and swim as long as the group wants  before returning to the Big Creek trail, with its initial short but steep uphill climbs to 2 more increasingly beautiful waterfalls on Big Creek; capped by a stunning, wild 3-tiered 50′ beauty, in a deep gorge. . After the last waterfall we make out way out the relatively mellow uphill to easy road walk out to our cars.

Please note this is D3-D4 level hike due to distance and elevation changes. The hot summer temperature and humidity also makes it challenging. It is not suitable for young children. It is also mountainous and prone to thunderstorms.
