SUMMARY:Smithgall Woods / Dukes Creek - #_LOCATIONNAME - 16 Nov 19 08:00
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, November 16\, 2019\nTime: 8:00 am at Intown Co
mmunity Church (2059 Lavista Rd NE\, Atlanta\, GA 30329)\nDifficulty Level
 : D2-D3 (easy to moderate)\nHiking Distance: 6-7  miles\nCost: $10 per pe
rson\n\nCathy Ellis Trail\n0.5 mile one way\nAlso called the Chunanee Fall
s Trail...  A moderate half-mile hike (mostly downhill) leads to a beauti
ful waterfall on what is known as the Alabama Branch. A short wooden bridg
e crosses a section of a historic water ditch\, part of the early gold min
ing history. Deeply shaded by rhododendron\, the last 400 yards is alongsi
de a noisy stretch of Dukes Creek.\n\nMartin's Mine Trail\n0.9 mile\nA woo
den bridge across Dukes Creek begins this picturesque and historical trail
. The 0.9-mile interprets the history of gold mining at this site. A verti
cal shaft of the earlier gold mining era is a focal point and provides a u
nique habitat for bats. A short extension from the main trail offers a vie
 w of a small\, but soothing waterfall.\n\nLaurel Ridge Trail\nLocated adja
cent to our Visitor Center\, this interpretive trail is a moderate 1.6-mil
e loop that climbs to Laurel Ridge and provides a seasonal view of Mt. Yon
ah.\n\nDukes Creek Falls Trail \n2 miles round trip\nIt is a series of th
ree switchbacks that lead down to falls on Davis Creek at its confluence w
ith Dukes Creek. There are water cascades on Dukes Creek While the pathway
is remarkably level\, it descends more than 400 feet on the half-mile wal
 k. The sound of the waterfall can only be heard at the middle of each swit
chback\, fading as the next turn approaches. Where the footpath switches b
ack the sounds of the forest are louder than the falls. After the second s
witch the path now narrows considerably. At the falls three more observati
on decks have been built into a boardwalk. It's cool here\, courtesy of Go
 d's air conditioning.\n\nRequired Items:\n1 - 1.5 liters of water\nGood hi
king shoes or tennis shoes\nLayered clothing\nLunch and snacks\nDaypack\n
 \nRecommended Items:\nHiking poles or stick\nCamera\nSunglasses
