SUMMARY:Backpacking - Jack's River - #_LOCATIONNAME - 24 May 14 00:00
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 24-26\, 2014\nMeeting Time: 7:30 am on May 24\nEnding
Time: About 5:00 pm on May 26\nMeeting Place: Intown Community Church\nDi
fficulty: D4-D5 - mostly because you are carrying a backpack and navigatin
 g river crossings.\nHiking Distance: About 20 miles over 3 days.\nCosts: $
20 for the driver\, Aprroximately $30 for food and maybe some costs if you
need to rent equipment.\n\nThis hike is only open to people who have prev
iously hiked with Atlanta Hikes.\n\nJack's River Trail follows the Jack's
River in the Cohutta Wilderness. This will be a two night backpacking hike
. This is a great hike where you will experience things you possibly have
not experienced before. It is a wilderness area so there are no restroom f
acilities.\n\nAs we are mostly following the river there are not a lot of
incline changes. However we will be crossing the river about 50 times dur
ing the hike. You will need to wear appropriate footwear. I highly recomme
nd wearing river shoes such as these. Keen River Shoes.  You don't have t
o get this brand but look for something that will protect your toes.  You
can use a pair a light tennis shoes but you are likely to get blisters as
they will be continuously wet. You will not have time to change your shoe
s every time we cross the river so plan on hiking with wet feet. I would a
lso recommend a hiking pole or stick as it is sometimes tricky to keep you
r balance when crossing the river. The depth of the river will be from ank
le deep to possibly waist deep. When the river is waist deep it doesn't fl
ow as fast so don't panic too much. However the river bed is slippery so t
read carefully. If you do bring a hiking pole bear in mind it might not be
good for use after this trip as water sometimes damages it's ability to e
xtend.\n\nOther items needed which you may be able to borrow or rent.\n- T
ent (could be shared)\n- Sleeping bag (probably won't be shared \;)\n\nDo
not worry if you don’t have these items. We will make sure everyone is p
roperly equipped before we start this hike. I will provide a checklist whi
ch will be sent to people who sign up.\n\nPlease sign up early and definit
ely by 5/12/14 if you wish to go on this hike. Signing up early encourages
others to go on the hike and means there is less likelihood of me cancell
 ing it due to apparent lack of interest.\n\n&nbsp\;
